There was a time, of course there was, when I saw psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, as the way forward for humanity. A group therapy on every street corner! That was in the fifties and sixties. Psychotherapy was then indeed a subversive force for change, working away on the edges of a stubborn, reactionary, militaristic, punitive, patriarchal society. It was everything that was progressive, radical; therapy stood for change, understanding, for personal and social advance. But it just isn’t like that any more. Psychotherapy, like feminism, has been absorbed into the mainstream, has become a tool of the establishment, part of the establishment. This of course is the fate of all revolutionary movements. Revolution works away hidden for years, then seizes power, becomes that power, is in itself the new reactionary force, and has to be resisted. The wheel turns; the truth, as Ibsen remarks in An Enemy of the People, in the end becomes the lie.
